Ekaterinburg: Rusalka

For the second time in its history, the Ekaterinburg State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre staged Antonín Dvořák’s Rusalka. The production, premiered on May 19, was created by a Czech-Slovak team led by director Tomáš Pilař, current head of the opera ensemble of the J. K. Tyl Theatre in Pilsen, and Ekaterinburg’s music director Oliver Dohnányi.

The other Czechs involved are Pavel Kodeda (scenography), Ivana Miklošková (costumes) and Daniel Tesař (light design). The four singers alternating in the title role of Rusalka are Viktoria Novikova, Jelena Dementevova, Natalya Karlova and Olga Tenyakova, the role of the Prince is sung by Vladimir Cheberyak, Eugene Kryukov, Ilham Valiyev and Kirill Matveev. Sung in Czech with Russian subtitles, the opera will be performed four times more by the end of this season.
